Beautiful!
I bought this axe to upgrade from a Helko Black Forest Hatchet. The Helko works fine now, but it took quite a bit of work to correct the bevel and it is quite heavy for detailed work and long carving sessions. This Kalthoff axe is light, really well balanced and holds and edge for a good long time. It is hung perfectly! When I choke up on the head it is super comfortable in my hand and I can make the smallest of cuts with precision. Sometimes I simply use it to shave off flakes of wood to clean up a spoon. It's no big tree chopper, but the weight is enough to carve without wearing me out. I recommend it.
This is now my favourite axe
It is well balanced, beautifully sharp, maintains its sharpness really well and is easily kept sharp with stropping 1st suede & compound & finally leather.
The Robin Wood axe was nice to use as a beginner. It’s served me well and I don’t regret starting with it. And now after getting this axe I realise how much nicer it is to use this Kalthoff axe and appreciate its finer points all the more. You won’t regret it 😁
I've been making do with a Gransfor Bruk Wildlife Hatchet but this carving axe is significantly better. The balance, the size, the weight, the shape of the cutting edge, the profile, it's just perfect. Easier to use and control and feels like a natural extension of your arm.
Been using this axe solidly for a few weeks now. Absolutely love it. Perfect size for spoon carving. Came razor sharp as expected. Would recommend to anyone.
