A high quality hook knife (spoon knife) made from an excellent high alloy steel, very hard and tough so they hold an edge for a long time. The handles are beech and around 19cm long, allowing for a great range of grips to be used efficiently.

This compound curve hook knife design is designed for versatility. The gradually tightening curve towards the end of the spoon knife blade allows you to carve most size spoons with ease, from small caddy spoons and eating spoons to larger ladles and kuksas.

This knife comes razor sharp and ready to use however eventually you will need to sharpen it yourself. Check out our tool care tips page for sharpening methods. We highly recommend including a sheath with your purchase to protect your knife and reduce the amount of time you need to spend re-sharpening.

View the open curve version of this spoon knife in use along with three different grips in the video below.

We recommend only sharpening hook knives on the inside edge as you have a flat registration point to work with.  The outside of the blade has a convex surface from the tip to heel as well as from the edge to the spine which means that there is a complexity to could lead to headaches if you get it wrong.

Regular stropping however on the inside edge using a dowel with stropping compound and a stropping paddle for the outside edge is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening your hook knives.

Best value

Outstanding value for money. For the price and level of quality, Wood Tools hook knives are probably the best value on the market. I've used them for several years with barely a problem to report. Highly recommended, especially the deep open curve.

Straight from the pack

The Wood Tool hook knife arrived on Friday and I immediately put it to use on a small recycled Australian cedar piece.
How heartening that you can still buy such tools. It did every thing asked of it; rolled, sliced and cut. lovely control from the octagonal handle. The generous length of the handle seemed to give it a nice balance in my fat carpenters hands.
This tool looks like it has been made for a purpose by someone who cares.
