Focuser 52100 Forged Gouge FC145

A solid, hand-forged carving gouge for clean hollowing and controlled paring. The FC145 pairs a compact cherry handle with a 25 mm edge in tough 52100 high-carbon steel, hardened to around RC 60 for a crisp, durable bite.

Why we rate it

  • Sharp, dependable steel: 52100 at ~RC 60 takes a keen edge and holds it through green-wood fibres.

  • Comfort in hand: The cherry handle is short and positive—easy to choke up for control or lever for waste removal.

  • Hand-made, not stamped: Practical, forged geometry that suits both left- and right-handed carvers.

How we use it

Seat the bevel and take light slicing cuts with the grain. For bowls, cups and deeper hollows, use short, linked strokes and let the bevel ride to keep the surface clean. When you need a bit more power, lever from the neck while your forward hand keeps control.

Care

Wipe the edge dry after carving and oil lightly to prevent rust. Maintain with a hard-backed strop; re-hone as needed. Store dry to protect the cherry handle.

We have a great sharpening starters kit to help you keep your gouge and other tools sharp.

Regular stropping however on the inside edge using a felt or leather wheel with stropping compound and a stropping paddle for the outside edge is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening your gouge.
