Focuser Spokeshave FC115 — a new take on a traditional spokeshave

A modern, wooden-bodied spokeshave for clean, controlled shaping. Focuser have kept the classic feel but updated the build: beech body, a high-carbon steel blade, and a brass-lined cutting edge for smooth, low-friction passes. It’s the sort of spokeshave you reach for when you want tidy facets, fair curves and a finish that needs minimal sanding.

Why we rate it

  • Traditional idea, refined: A spokeshave you’ll use for chamfers, curves and fairing work—only with a smoother bite thanks to the brass at the cutting edge.

  • Solid, simple materials: Beech wood handle/body and a high-carbon steel blade give a good balance of feel, edge retention and easy sharpening.

  • Made by hand: Each unit is hand-made, so fit and finish feel intentional rather than stamped-out.

Key details

  • Blade: High-carbon steel, 38 mm cutting width.

  • Body: Beech wood.

  • Length: 256 mm overall.

  • Cutting edge: Brass embedded at the edge to boost strength and smoothness.

How to use

Set the blade fine and take light, even strokes with the grain. For curves, skew the spokeshave slightly and adjust your grip so the sole tracks the arc. Keep the edge keen and you’ll get thin, curly shavings and a clean surface ready for a quick scrape or strop.

Care

Back off the blade when you’re done, wipe the spokeshave dry and give the steel a touch of oil. Sharpen as needed; the high-carbon steel takes a crisp edge and responds well to stones or films.

We have a great sharpening starters kit to help you keep your spokeshave blade and other tools sharp.

Regular stropping with stropping compound and a stropping paddle is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening.
