Koyama Ko Hina Kanna – 42mm Smoothing Plane

This is one of those small Japanese planes that punches well above its size.

The Koyama 42mm ko-hina kanna sits somewhere between a block plane and a traditional smoother. It’s compact, simple, and incredibly capable when it’s set up right. Perfect for bringing small components down to final dimension with clean, controlled cuts.

The laminated blade (blue paper steel over soft iron) takes a keen edge and holds it, while the 150mm dai gives you enough reference to stay accurate without feeling clunky in the hand.

Like all Japanese planes, it rewards a bit of setup and tuning — but once dialled in, it’ll pull fine, whisper-thin shavings that are hard to beat.

Where it shines

  • Final dimensioning of small parts
  • Cleaning up facets on carved work
  • Light smoothing where a full-size kanna feels like overkill
  • Workshop or tool roll friendly

And this is where it really fits in with what we do…

👉 It pairs beautifully with the Chopstick Making Jig
If you’re making chopsticks, this plane gives you the control to sneak up on final thickness and leave a clean, finished surface straight off the tool.

What to expect

This is a production Japanese kanna, not a high-end hand-forged piece — which is exactly why it works so well:

  • Affordable entry into kanna use
  • Blade comes sharp but expects tuning
  • Dai will benefit from fettling to suit your climate
  • A great “learning plane” that still earns its place long term

Specs

  • Blade width: 42mm
  • Edge width: approx. 36mm
  • Body length: 150mm
  • Body width: 55mm

If you’ve been curious about Japanese planes, this is a solid place to start.

Small, capable, and honest — and when paired with something like your chopstick jig, it becomes a seriously useful little finishing tool rather than just a novelty.

** chopstick jig is for display purposes only, not included.
