Von Trott Finishing Hook Knife – Right Hand

There’s a difference between a tool that removes material… and one that leaves a surface behind.

This finishing hook knife from Peter Trott is built for that second job.

Hand forged here in Australia by a carver who understands the final stages of a cut, this is a knife designed for control, finesse, and clean surfaces inside the bowl.

What sets it apart

This is not a roughing tool.

The sweep is refined and controlled, allowing you to take whisper-thin shavings and leave a surface that needs little to no sanding. It tracks cleanly through the cut without tearing fibres, even in trickier grain.

The edge is fine, but supported — giving you that balance of sharpness and reliability that’s essential when you’re working close to finished form.

In hand, it feels predictable. No surprises. Just smooth, controlled cuts where you want them.

In use

This is the knife you reach for once the shape is there.

It excels at refining spoon bowls, finishing cuts in kuksas, and bringing a piece to life with clean, deliberate passes. It rewards a light touch and sharp technique, and it’s at its best when you let the edge do the work.

Sharpening & care

We recommend only sharpening hook knives on the inside edge, as you have a flat registration point to work with. The outside of the blade has a convex surface from tip to heel, as well as from edge to spine, which adds a level of complexity that can lead to headaches if you get it wrong.

With a finishing tool like this, it’s less about removing material and more about maintaining that edge.

Regular stropping is key. Use a dowel with stropping compound on the inside edge, and a stropping paddle on the outside.

Do that consistently and you’ll keep that keen, clean-cutting edge for a long time before you even need to think about resharpening.

Built by a carver, not just a maker

Pete doesn’t just make knives — he carves. That shows in every detail.

This is a tool shaped by real-world use. The kind of knife that encourages you to slow down, refine your cuts, and enjoy the process.

Right hand use

This is a right-handed hook knife, suited to right-handed carvers using controlled pull cuts.

The bottom line

If you’re looking for a hook knife that excels at refinement, surface quality, and control, this is one you’ll keep reaching for.
