Wood Tamer Compound Hook Knife

Made in collaboration with Strongway Tools

I’m not a blacksmith—but I know exactly what I want in a hook knife. Working closely with the skilled team at Strongway Tools, we’ve brought to life the Wood Tamer Compound Hook Knife, built to meet the needs of spoon and bowl carvers alike.

The compound radius on this knife is intentionally subtle—less aggressive than many other compound hooks out there. That’s by design. It’s ideal for carving cooking spoons, eating spoons, and thanks to the tip curling back on itself, it’s also great for hollowing out bowls and kuksas without scuffing the base as you shape the walls. Honestly, it’s exceeded even my highest expectations. Huge thanks to Strongway for making it a reality.

Each knife is hand-forged from tough 52100 steel, polished to a mirror finish, and features a hollow on the inside edge for easier sharpening.

Now fitted with a Blackwood handle (replacing the previously offered stained Ash), this knife comes razor sharp and ready to carve—nestled in a high-quality leather sheath.

We recommend only sharpening hook knives on the inside edge as you have a flat registration point to work with.  The outside of the blade has a convex surface from the tip to heel as well as from the edge to the spine which means that there is a complexity to could lead to headaches if you get it wrong.

Regular stropping however on the inside edge using a dowel with stropping compound and a stropping paddle for the outside edge is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening your hook knives.
