Focuser Swan-Neck Carving Gouge FC848

A compact swan-neck gouge for clean hollowing and tidy access where a straight gouge won’t reach. The crank in the neck lets you work inside cups, kuksas and bowls, steer under the rim, and lever the cut without scuffing the rim.

Why we rate it

  • Made for hollowing: The swan-neck geometry gives clearance in tight curves and lets you guide the split of fibres rather than fight them.

  • Dependable steel: Hand-forged 52100 high-carbon with a working hardness around 60 HRC for a crisp, long-lasting edge.

  • Short, controlled handle: Easy to choke up for precision or lever for waste removal. Cherry timber feels good in the hand.

How we use it

Seat the edge, take light slicing cuts with the grain, and use the neck as a lever to control depth. For undercuts, skew the tool and keep the bevel riding for a clean surface that needs minimal sanding.

Care

Wipe the blade dry after carving and oil lightly to prevent rust. Keep a strop on firm backing to maintain the edge; re-hone as needed.

We have a great sharpening starters kit to help you keep your gouge and other tools sharp.

Regular stropping however on the inside edge using a felt or leather wheel with stropping compound and a stropping paddle for the outside edge is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening your gouge.
