Wood Tamer Walnut Range Carving Axe

Designed by Wood Tamer. Built for carvers.

We will be making regular drops of these as I can complete grinding a batch.

This is the axe I’ve wanted to make for years — an affordable, purpose-built carving axe that feels right from the very first swing.

Unlike most entry-level axes that start life as something else and get “converted” for carving, the Walnut Range Carving Axe was designed by us at Wood Tamer specifically for the craft. Every curve, facet and angle has been shaped with carving in mind — from roughing out blanks to refining spoons, bowls and sculptural work.

The bearded head lets you choke right up on the handle for close control, while the bell-shaped butt gives you the power and balance you need for full swings. The head carries a 25° inclusive bevel that’s polished for smooth, efficient cuts, and the polished pole adds a touch of refinement that makes it a joy to use.

Each axe is hand-forged, with honest tool marks and forge texture that tell the story of how it was made. No two are exactly alike — and that’s how it should be.

The walnut handle is faceted by hand for a relaxed, natural grip. Walnut varies beautifully in colour and grain, so each one is unique — just like the work you’ll create with it.

It comes with a double-stitched leather sheath, carefully designed so you can sheath and unsheath the axe easily without cutting through the leather.
