Focuser Swan-Neck Carving Gouge FC209

A swan-neck gouge built for clean hollowing where a straight gouge can’t reach. The cranked neck gives you clearance under rims and inside cups, kuksas and small bowls, so you can lever the cut and keep the bevel riding without bruising the surface. Hand-forged from 52100 high-carbon steel and supplied with a compact cherry handle for solid control.

Why we rate it

  • Made for inside work: The swan-neck geometry lets the edge work below the rim while your hand stays out of the way.

  • Good steel, keen edge: 52100 at around 60 HRC takes a crisp edge and holds it through green-wood fibres.

  • Short, confident handle: Cherry handle gives a steady grip for controlled paring or a little leverage when clearing waste.

Key details

  • Steel: 52100 high-carbon

  • Hardness: ~60 HRC

How we use it

Seat the edge, take light slicing cuts with the grain, and steer depth by levering the neck while keeping the bevel in contact. For undercuts, skew the tool slightly and keep strokes short for a clean finish that needs minimal sanding.

Care

Wipe the blade dry after carving and oil lightly to prevent rust. Maintain the edge with a hard-backed strop; re-hone as needed.

We have a great sharpening starters kit to help you keep your gouge and other tools sharp.

Regular stropping however on the inside edge using a felt or leather wheel with stropping compound and a stropping paddle for the outside edge is a great way to maintain a keen edge for  longer before you will even need to think about resharpening your gouge.
